I coach head coaches in ELITE sport
Former Head Coach of AFL Team Canada
Author of The Tough Stuff and Second Set of Eyes
Hi – I’m Cody.
I’m a second set of eyes for head coaches in elite sport.
My 1:1 coaching focuses on the deep craft of the head coaching position, pushing you towards excellence in the four domains you are required to master:
Yourself, the Organization, the Locker Room, the Game.
With high skill and high support in these areas, you’ll transcend the ability to give a championship performance, and become a coach that’s capable of building a juggernaut.
WHAT I COACH
The Four Crafts framework is a custom-built diagnosis and development tool based on the real-world complexities of the head coaching position. It sits behind all of my coaching.
Develop the skills to learn about yourself, refine your coaching philosophy, and uncover what you truly believe.
PERSONAL CRAFT
ORGANIZATIONAL CRAFT
Develop the skills to navigate the off-field dynamics, the commercial elements, and leading a large enterprise.
LOCKER ROOM CRAFT
Develop the skills to build a robust culture, manage your players, and lead the team towards their vision.
GAME CRAFT
Develop the skills to teach the game, construct a winning team, and prepare your players for competition.
What coaches say about my work
HOW I COACH
I strongly believe in the benefits of 1:1 coaching, so it is the only service I offer.
I predominantly coach online, allowing me to respond quickly, support globally, and work across a multitude of sports.
Each coach has a unique context, cadence, and cost, so get in touch with me and we can build something specific to you.
Questions?
-
Coaching is a highly personal endeavour, so let’s book a discovery call to figure out if we’re a good partnership.
Each coach that I work with has a unique context, cadence, and cost, so if we decide to work together we’ll build something specific plan around you.
-
It is helpful if you have a personal development budget or a pot of money to work with.
Some coaches that I work with pay by-the-hour after each session, some have a retainer to access me across a whole season (and everything in between).
If we decide to work together, we’ll build our plan around your specific financial situation.
-
I sure do. I work with ambitious assistant coaches who are striving to become the next generation of great head coaches.
-
Personally, I think the benefits are innumerable, but to highlight the top ones:
You receive dedicated and sustained focus on your leadership performance and coaching craft.
You receive rapid and detailed feedback loops on your goals and development opportunities throughout the season.
You receive clear-minded input on decisions, priorities, and anticipated challenges from someone outside the environment (who carries no politics, player relationships, biases).
You receive a safe haven to experiment and explore new ideas, or dump some of the emotional toll without judgment.
You receive immediate transfer of useful information, ideas, and concepts from across different sports, in real-time.
You receive an ally who is responsible for having difficult conversations with you when your leadership performance drifts off track.
In most cases, you don’t receive these otherwise.
-
Yes. For my more established coaching relationships, I commit to visiting them once-per-year during the season.
Even a short two-or-three day visit gives me extraordinary context to help guide a coach in the right direction.
-
Yes, I’ve recently added some packaged offerings to make it easier. You can now book me for:
Single Session: A 75-minute coaching session to tackle your most pressing challenges.
6x Sessions: A bundle of 60-minute coaching sessions to go after a particular goal.
12x Sessions: A bundle of 60-minute coaching sessions that can be used weekly or monthly.
Full Season: A full-scale coaching program with weekly meetings and daily contact about your coaching and leadership performance.
Toronto Intensive: A three-day intensive program on-site with me in Toronto, Canada. Ideal if you need to rebuild your coaching philosophy.
Exec Leadership: While my focus is on head coaches, by request I’ve also started working 1:1 with GMs, Sporting Directors, Athletic Directors, Heads of Department, VPs and CEOs.

Books
I’ve written three books which chronicle my journey in coaching and leadership.
Second Set Of Eyes reimagines head coaching for the contemporary sporting landscape, moving us past self-help and self-education, to peer support and guided learning.
The Tough Stuff looks at the emotional toll of head the head coaching position, and explores how the weight impacts a coach's ability to perform when it matters most.
Where Others Won’t investigates how intelligent teams are able to organize and utilize their people to create competitive advantage, and drive innovation.

NEWSLETTER
My newsletter is split into two sections:
Coach Craft draws on wisdom hidden away in coaching autobiographies — the real, written record of how great coaches thought, led, and competed. This craft knowledge is then taken and mapped to today’s coaching challenges.
Deep Craft is my personal newsletter where I will document what I’m seeing in the field, write about contemporary coaching challenges, investigate new research, and share tools that I use with my clients.
Here are my most popular posts:
invite me to speak
I've spoken to coaching departments, national governing bodies, and sporting organizations all around the world. I speak about skillful coaching, elite leadership, and competitive advantage.
My most popular talks
You’re A Performer Too
You’re a high-performance knowledge worker who is asked to place tremendous strain on your emotional and cognitive resources. But just as you can drain those resources, you can also train them. To be your best, you need to choose a lifestyle that facilitates elite coaching performance. In this talk, I’ll show you how.
The Craft Of Coaching
Craftspeople stand for work that exudes three things: excellence, elegance, and endurance. In a modern sports landscape that is increasingly standing for cheap, quick, and transactional, I provide tangible examples of how timeless wisdom still wins, and why we shouldn't be so quick to label coaching techniques 'old school'.
Winning After Winning
Everyone talks about wanting to have sustained success, but very few coaches have built systems designed to win after winning. In this talk, I show you how to create a robust philosophy - and instil a mindset - of repeated winning, while also recognizing the challenges of going from hunter to hunted.
